31.
Beatrice
I shall not come again? Or ever see you?
Filippo
Not in this life.
Beatrice
( Langhs.)
Filippo
Why do you laugh?
Beatrice
because you say in life.
I feel I can not live without you,
And so if I must die, I 'll come again,
And take you with me.
Filippo
And so you play with death, just aswith
Life! Go!And farc you well!
Beatrice
We shall meet again, Filippo!
Philippo
Fare you well!
Beatrice
(Goes slowly up the dark path at back and disappears.)
Filippo.
( Looks after her. A long watt.)
She's gone as if she'd vanished from me, like her dream
And I thought she was mine.I'méeresol with shame!
Is it man s lot not wholly to possess,
They flout this curse; for no one
Gives himself kholly up. Only I,comply betrayed
Gave everything for nothing, reputation, honor, and courage,
And was ready, to free as a silly boy, away
From therichreatening fee, today
Or from the dagger of a friend!
Should I not follow her?
There is no means, no way, bold and streight forward
For, she ended my existence,
By the truthfulness of her dream! Therefore, the whim,
To win her!
