THE Aparted
A man of substantial family, who had frequented
society in both town and country when a youth, besides
pursuing various orts and Iciences as an amateur,
journeyed to distant lands in his maturer years, and
returned home only when his hair was beginning to
se to go to do
he built himself a house overlooking a wide plain,
and he took to wife the faireing and lately orphaned
danghter of a farmer. His parents and relatives
were long since dead, for his friends of former days
he felt no ottraction, and was little tepted to make
new ones; so in this district, which was almost always
irradiated by an asure sky, he devòted himself to his
facourite study of astronomy.
One sultry night, when Erasmus was in his tower,
as usual, and engrossed in this occupation, a mist
arose from the hamp meadowe, and gradually obscured
the whole view of the distant heavens. Erasmus walked
