Hr RECAPTION OF AYTHUR SCANITELER IN TAN UNITED STATES
Part I. Dramatic Works
Arthur Schnitzler, one of the greatest author living to-
day, is desmous in Austria and Germany and is also well-known
and well-liked in the United States, if one is to judge by the
number of his playa produced here and by the number of his days
and Ctories translated and published here. Schnitzler w s born
in Vienna on May 10, 1662, passed his examinations at the
Gymnasium in 1877, whereupon he began the study of medicine and
gradulated from the University in May, 1865. For a few years he
was connected with various elinies, and during this period
Wrote numerous reviess and articles for medical journale. From
his (hilihod [Schnitzler] had written poems and compositions.
Some of his works were later published in periodicals such as
An der schönen blauen Donau, but it was not until 1692 when he
published Anatol, that he really became known as a write. In
the United States too it was not until the publication in 1911
of Granville Larker's.translation of Anatol that Schnitzler at-
tracted any considerable attention.
