Arthur Schnitzler’s new long“ short-story,
Spiel im Morgengrauen ¼ (S. Fischer,
Berlin), is more dramatie tHan many of bis
stage plays. Twenty-four,Hours in the life of
a young officer show Mim almost the most
mtendy zouth of His regfment, gambling #o win
a sum sufficient to Hay back the sum an ex¬
officer friend has, borrpwed from his present
employers, unknown to them, wirming the
double of it, lost#g it, winning and losing it
again and all he possessed besides. The
woman in the cnse is an old light of love 5f
his, whom his uncle has married. She has
grown a terribly hard business woman, and
sends him the money he has asked her for in
a moment reminiscent of the past half-an¬
hour after he has taken his ovn life. This is
Schnitzler at his best, more mellow than
ironic, and tender as he is realistic.
