31.
Fraeulein EIse

in the Austrian Tyrol. A spe¬
cial delivery letter from her
motherurges her to lose no
time in raising a sum of money
to save her father from a prison
sentence.
How Fräulein Else endeavors
to sécure the money, and the
ultimate outcome, form a narra¬
tive that is dramatic indeed.
But the real stroke of geuius
lies in the way in which Schnitz¬
ler presents the girl’s pomt of
view. The entire action is seen
with Fräulein Else’s eyes, heard
with her ears, felt through her
senses—all so realistically and
intensely told that at times it
is strange to realize that this is
actually a book that is being
read.
