Statement.
This memorandum is submitted pursuant tothe
permission granted by the Court upon the argu¬
ment of the appeal.
The History of Reigen'', as a Book and
as a Play Throughout the Civilized
World, Clearly Indicates Its Universal
Acceptance. It Cannot, Therefore, Be
Deemed Obscene.
Dr. Schnitzler wrote“ Reigen' in 1896-97. It was
among the first of his notable series of books that
have since won him world-wide acclaim. It was orig¬
inally published in an edition of about two hundred
copies in 1900. The first general edition was pub¬
lished by the firm of B. Harz, in Vienna, Austria, in
1903; and more than ten thousand copies were sold.
Other editions followed. By 1920 over one hundred
thousand copies of various editions throughout
Europe had been distributed.
The work was widely discussed. Highly favor¬
able criticism appeared shortly after publication in
