Aus London wird uns berichtet: Artur Schnißlers
„Anatol=Zyklus wird jetzt in London aufgeführt. Granville
Barker, der ausgezeichnete dramatische Schriftsteller und
Schauspieler, ist gegenwärtig ohne Theater und spielt den
„Anatol“=Zyklus im Variety Palace-Theater. Gestern brachte er
die erste der Dialogskizzen, die brillant gespielt wurde und großen
Beifall fand. Die anderen, von denen zwei übrigens schon vor
nahezu dici Jahren von einem hiesigen Theaterverein
gegeben wurden, folgen.

Mr. Granville Barker on the
Variety Stage.
Mr. Granville Barkers début on the
variety stage at the Palace Theatre last
night met only with partial success.
Frankly, the episode from Arthur Schnitz¬
ler’s Anatol," in which the actor ap¬
peared in the title rôle, is too thin and
delicate in texture for presentation not
only at a music-hall but even at most
theatres.
Imagine a Dolly Dialogue on the
stage and you may obtain some idea of
the tour-de-force Mr. Barker has
attempted. Anatol is a sequence of
scenes, the first of which, Ask no Ques¬
tions and you'll hear no stories," was
given last evening. The story itself is a
trille light as air. It is a mere phase in
the life of a young bedonist, who, having
fallen under the spell of Hilda, a demi¬
mondaine, cannot believe, in spite of his
cynicism, that she is unfaithful to him.
et he is anxious to know the truth, and
hypnotises her so as to wring the fatal
secret from her. Hilda submits die
to the ordeal, but Anatol, when the girl
is in a trance at his mercy, hesitates to
question her. Finally, he gives up the
idea, wakes Hilda up, and gives her¬
kiss.
Mr. Barker himself did not appear at
his best in the rôle which, it should be
admitted, must be a most difficult one for
any actor to interpret.
Miss Gertrude Robins looked delightful
as Hilda, while Mr. Nige Playfair played
the part of Max, Anatoll's friend, with re¬
freshing humour and spirit.
