Francesco
at passed through your thoughts, Beatrice,
these last sultry
evening hours?
Vittorino
Don't askher, francesco!
Beatrice
No, Vittorino, never shall we
Ask each other about dreams. Life is to be awake,
And light is intended for us both.
take me to Lugano, dear Vittorino!
Vittorino
Yes, Beatrice,I will take you there, there prepare a home for
you, where you may rest from your dreams, and where you will
forget them.
Francesco
all of this, Beatrice?
Then you say yes to
Bestrice
I did not say no,did I? Yes,Vittorino,yes!
Francesco
Then come!
Beatrice
To the church?
Francesco
First to the house,
That father may bless you.
Vittorino
Will he understand it?
Francesco
A child’s prayer soles to heaven.
Why not his?
Vittorino
Beatrice,I thank you! I am most happy! I feel that you are
all in all to me. 'Tis true I know that you art born to quite
a different life, than to be the wife of a toadesman. Think but
this though, than you have given me your word for all time, and
that no man in the world can give you so much love as I, and that
I would surely die, if you ever forget your promise.
(All three enter house.)
Four touch beerers appear at the end of the street. Be-
hind them, coming slowly to the front of the stage, the
Duke, Carlo Magnani, Guidotti, young Malvezzi, and several
other nobles.)
