BERNH:
You have been in there?
SISTER:
It will be too late, your Revenue.
(KURT hurries into the ward)
BERNH:
(to the SISTER) You told the patient that his Revenue
was here?
SISTER:
Yes, Professor.
BERNH:
I see. And -- answer me quite quietly -- how did
the patient take it? Did she say anything? Speak up
Well?
SISTER:
Of course, she got a little bit of a shock.
BERNH:
( Without anger) Well, speak up, what did she say?
"Must I really die?"
SISTER:
KURT:
(coming out of the ward) All is over.
( lhort Pause)
BERNH:
Bon’t let it upset you, your Revenue. It was not
your fault. You only meant to do your duty. I wished
to do the same. I'm sorry enough that I wasbringingful.
PRIEST:
It is not for you, Professor, to grant me absolution.
The poor creature in there died a sinner, without the
consolations of her Religion. And for that you are
respondible.
