A. Beatrice
Inul926 Simon and Schuster followed up the Fraulein lise
triumph by peblishing Beatrios and Mone but the Brave, the latter
of which had been published in Tho Dial in 1925 as "Lieutenant
Gustl". But, whereas many nice things were said about Beatrice,
it by no means seconded to the level of Fraulein Else, with which
it was frequently compared since both, together with Bertha Garlan
belong to the woman trology. The sex elements were the tanget
which bore the brut of the orities' attacks. In Bookman we read
"Reigen's author has made another profound study of the sex urge,
but the other side of the question is trampioned by G. D. R. who
"It is told in that frank, open, jontinental manner that
says,
puts to shame the sky innuendoes of the America sex slinger." (2)
Curious to say, the adverse Iriticlem came primarily from news-
papers in the East, especially in New York. E. Björkman thought,
To be understood and forgotten, this novel must be accepted as the
last very of despair of a decadent culture, which knew that its
death hour was near. It is a spiritually limited and at bottom
falsely sentimental book in spite of its high formal perfection
and the Uudeniable astuteness of its psychology. That a free
Coman of forty should be deemed lost or begraded because life
is still strong in her is something which genuine understanding (3)
of human nature and of the ways of life with us can hardly allow.
