It has been pointed out by Dr. O. P. Schinnerer that the
first words of Arthur Schnitzler ever to find their was into
point, a poem entitled "Liebeslied der Ballerine" and a dialect
"Über den istriotismus" appeared not in a Viennese or Austrian
peper, but in Germany in Der freie Landesbote of Munich. This
fact foreshadows the fate of many of Schnitzler's later works. 1)

After early contributions, chiefly to the periodical Ñn der
schönen blauen Donau.(2) Schnitzler contributed regularly to the
Neue Deutsche Rundschau, published by S. Fischer, and thereby came
into contact with the published house that was to issue the great
majority of his works. From 1892 until 1914 this periodical pub-
strinted thirteen works by Schnitzler, most of which were represented
later in book form. (3)

It is interesting to note that during the corresponding
period Gerhart Hauptmann, the most outstanding author in Germany,
published only seven works in the above mentioned periodical. (4)
