During the twenty years from 1895 until 1914 no less than
sixty-two critics wrote on Schnitzler in the pages of the period-
icals covered in this study. (6)
In surveying the list of critics, (7) one finds such well
known men as Julius Bab, Oskar Bis, Arthur Eloesser, Maximilian
Harden, Alfred Kerr, Felix Salten, Paul Schlenther, Franz Servaes,
and Jackb Wassermann represented. The fact that these men inter-
este themselves in Schnitzler seems to orroborate a statement
made by Julius Bab in 1918, the year of the fiftieth Duiversary
of Schnitzler's birthday. At that time Babwrote: „Wer feiert
Schnitzlers 50. Geburtstag? Es sind in ganz ausgesprochenen Masse
die sogenannten Gebildeten, die feiner kultivierten Kreise des
Bürgertums, des grossstädtischen vor allem, die an Schnitzler einen
lebendigen Anteil nehmen.“ (8)
Schnitzler, in the early years of the twentieth century,
was not very well known in the provinces. Alfredern, in an
