In general Schnitzler's prose works were received with en-

thusissm. The hashest orities had to admit that Schnitzler possessed
qualities that few otherluthors in Germany or Austria had, As
Josef Körner remarked in the concluding chapter of his excellent
work: "Zarte Stimmungen zu erzeugen, ist auch das Geheimnis seiner
sammetweichen Sprache und seiner unnachahmlichen Kunst der Dialog-
führung, die ihn auch der strengste Kritiker nicht antasten dürfte.
In der Technik des Andeutens, in der Verteilung verhaltener Ge-
bärden und Töne ist er undbertrefflicher Meister." (17)
Schnitzler's first collection of novellettes was entitled
Die Frau des Weisen. (1898). Sterben had been published in book
form by 3. Fischer in 1895, it first having appeared as a serial
in the Neue Deutsche Rundschau.(18) Schnitzler's first two works
Anatol and Märchen had to be published by the author at his own
expense,the former by the Bibliographisches Bureau in Berlin and
the latter by Fierson in Dresden. (19) However, with but one or
two exceptions, notably Reigen, all of Schnitzler's works in book
form vere published in Berlin by S. Fischer Verlag.
This collection of novellettes was favorably received in
Oct.
Berlin. Albert Geiger, a disciple of the talented zmil Strauss,
writing in Die Nation, says in summation of a review of these
