1900 was a prove year for Schnitzler. In addition to the
two novellettes just mentioned, he published his first long from
work that was really more novel than novellette, although it did
contain the characteristics of the latter as set doan by Paul
Heyse in his "falcon-theory".oritics, in general, approved this
work, too, although some were derogatory. Max Kampff asserts

eine subtile, psychologische Kleinkunst, die scharfäugig und fein-
hörig die Menschen in ihren geheimsten, uneingestandensten Regungen

the drama. Lebendige Stunden. Der Schleier der Beatrice. Der
einsame Weg, Zwischenspiel, and Der Ruf des Lebens were all pub-
lished in Berlin and played on the Berlin stage during this interim.
