MARGARET: Ah, they were alliealous of you. It was
quite natural; you were so different - and then, they all
courted me, just because I treated them all the same.
You must have noticed it, did'nt you? Why are you langhing?
CLEMENS: Funny; if anyone had told me that I should marry
a regular customer of the cafe Maximilian! I like the two
richta and in the last of all they were really like
characters in a play - Do you remember? They looked so
much slike and wentennership in everything - even with
the Russian on the ladder, it seemed to me.
MARGARET: I never bother myself about such things.
CLERENS: By the way, those two must have been Jews, were'nt
they?
MARGARET: Why?
CLEMENS: Well, they were always j Eking, and then their
accent -
MARGARET: You may keep your prejudiced remarks.
CLEMENS: Dear child, don't be so sensitive. I know that
you are only half Jewish - I really have nothing against
the Jows - I once had ateacher who prepared me for my
finals - who was a dew - my soul - and a splendid fellow.
One meets all kinds of people. I don't regret having met
your friends in Munich - that is part of one's experience
